Collect Coins for Fun

12th September 2008
by zoe

“Work, work, and more work” is the global mantra these days. As you get caught up in the rat race for power and pelf stop awhile to think whether too much work is making you a dull boy! If you are constantly jittery or anxious, its time you had some time just for your self. A hobby like coin collecting could become an exciting and a competitive sport and do you a lot of good by diverting attention from mundane tasks. So hoard interesting coins instead of dollars for a change!

A coin collection usually starts from modest beginnings. For example, you may have coins in your wallet from a trip to another country or you may come across old coins while rummaging about in an antique shop. You can base your collection on country, year, period, or subject. If you or a friend or family member travels a great deal globally, you would find it easy to collect coins of different countries. You may also choose a particular foreign country that interests you, say France or India, and collect coins of that country. In contrast, collect your nation’s coins if you want to know more about it!

Collecting by year involves collecting a particular coin every year of its manufacture. For example, if a certain coin was produced first in 1900 you collect from that year to the present. If a certain monarch’s reign interests you, collect coins from that period. Alternatively, you could collect ancient or medieval period Roman, Indian, or Greek coins. Subject collection would include coins on a particular subject, for example, maps, flowers, or ships.

Some coin collectors collect by error! I mean they collect faulty coins. These include clipped coins, off center coins, and coins with over dates. These coins are very rare as automation has reduced the possibility of errors. This makes them even more interesting and desirable. You can also collect by material, say gold or silver.

Apart from picking up interesting coins during international travel, you can get them at local antique shops, flea markets, coin shows, and auctions. Some coin collectors say that rummaging through charity boxes kept at local stores also leads to interesting discoveries. But, don’t forget to inform the shop owner before embarking on such activities.

Coin collecting is great, but where are you going to store them?  Many people keep their coin collection in a box, but keeping coins all together can lead to scratches on their surface. It’s also difficult to locate a particular coin when required. To begin with, you can consider storing coins in separate paper envelopes, label the envelopes and, then, keep them inside a box. You can also opt for small plastic bags to store your coin collection. This way, in contrast to paper envelopes, you will be able to see your coins without touching them directly. However, ensure that the plastic bag is not made of PVC, which could harm the coins inside. When you develop a large collection you can choose a cardboard or plastic coin album. All these storage devices can be purchased from hobby shops, coin shops, or online stores.

Before you start buying expensive coins for your collection invest in a price guide, magnifying glass, and desk lamp. You can also join local coin collection clubs and read up books on this hobby.

Obtain Information About Creating Your Own Candles

12th September 2008
by adrian

Candlemaking is a great hobby. It’s fun, and fairly easy to learn. Supplies are not super-expensive, and are easily available. The best thing is that the variety you can create is infinite. There is no limit to what your imagination, and different candle making techniques, can do.

There are a variety of different supplies and ingredients you can choose from. There is your traditional candle wax, made of paraffin usually, which you can do so many things with. If you want to get away from that, consider making soy candles or gel candles, all of which have their own unique characteristics.

With colors, scents, shapes, sizes, number and kind of wicks, containers, and more, you can learn how to make any kind of candle you can dream of.

Candles make a great gift, and can be sold at excellent profit margins. That is because the perceived value of a candle far exceeds the cost of making one.

The real cost is in some initial supplies, then in ongoing replenishment to supplies. When I started, I bought about $300 worth of stuff: double boiler, multiple molds, some small tins, wicks, big blocks of three different waxes, scents, colors, some tools for holding wicks, thermometer, chemicals to make the wax do cool stuff, uh, I don’t remember what else.

With what I have, I can make probably 40 or 50 candles. Not a lot of huge ones, but some. Really, it’s so much fun creating new candles and learning new techniques.

Is Woodworking the Hobby for You?

11th September 2008
by zoe

by Paul Cameron

Woodworking covers a variety of processes, such as cabinetmaking, joinery, marquetry, turning, and woodcarving. Nevertheless, all expert craftspeople have had to learn the fundamental techniques of marking, measuring, dimensioning, assembling and finishing. These skills are the fundamentals of woodworking and are the nitty-gritty of woodworking, be it hobby or profession.

The capability to conceptualize three dimensionally is necessary to mark up the wood and to envisage how one piece fits with another and in what order. Also, you need to figure out which tools will produce the best final result, taking into consideration the precision required and the attributes of the wood.

The process of cutting the wood to size is called dimensioning; it’s a straightforward procedure in theory, but it takes a lot of practice to get it right. All except the most basic of woodworking projects call for cutting and putting together an assortment of joints. Long considered to be a test of a woodworker’s skill, joinery requires unwavering hand-eye coordination. Nevertheless, by practicing you will figure out the best way to secure two sections of wood together so they are durable but still attractive.

An essential add-on to these fundamental abilities is a perception of how wood performs. It’s a one of a kind, living object that swells and shrinks with shifts in humidity, an issue that a woodworker has to address in the planning and building of each item. Some woods are simpler to work with than others, and each piece, irrespective of the type, is unique in the way the grain twists and turns.

There isn’t one correct method to do anything in woodworking. The most effective method is the one that you’re most comfortable with, and balances all the variables such as how much time is required to finish the project, what tools you have available, how important it is that your project is of the highest quality, and how much enjoyment you get from the process.

Consider both the pros and cons of machines and hand tools when used in woodworking projects. Some argue that hand tools enable you to get the hang of cutting and forming wood without disrupting the grain. Other experts in the field believe that you can complete a project faster by using hand tools, mostly because of the time involved in preparing to work with mechanical tools. Yet others think exactly the opposite.

With some patience, the right tools and techniques, and a good plan, you might just end up creating a treasure that will be enjoyed for many years to come.

The Auction House: Making Your Way Through Antique Auctions

11th September 2008
by Ady

Antiques are a very popular investment. Some people keep antiques as a memento of their heydays. Others to have some kind of affinity with the past. Still others collect antiques as a peculiar hobby. It seems a lot of people have taken quite an interest in antiques. And where best to find these enthusiasts but in antique auctions.

Most antique sellers know that if they have items that their usual antique store owner wouldn’t purchase, they could always go and sell it at antique auctions. As a rule of thumb, the first go-to person is your antique appraiser. Once your item’s value has been determined, the auction house can opt to offer you an amount for the piece you brought in. Then they will include the item in an antique auction.

Some antique auction houses, however, will ask you to pay them to have your item auctioned off. You get to keep the amount for which your item was sold during the antique auction. For those who are new to the antique business, you might want to check out the television show Antiques Roadshow. It’s made especially for antique enthusiasts and is rather helpful in giving information about antique appraisal.

As for antique buyers, the basic advice is to just budget your funds. Be sure to have some liberal amount kept only for antique auctions. By liberal, we mean at least several hundred dollars since, as you might have guessed, antiques don’t sell for a cheap price.

Again we’d like to stress that for any auction, keep to the budget. There have been instances of people going into debt because they badly wanted an item. But remember that it’s an antique auction and naturally the bid for antiques there could only go higher. Keep in mind that there are indeed other channels through which you can purchase your precious pieces.

One of these channels is the antique buyer’s guide. It’s basically a roster of antique pieces on sale, their selling price, and the stores where they’re available. But certainly you should neither forget nor underestimate the wealth of contacts that your local antique store could provide for you.

Another channel is, of course, the World Wide Web. But be more cautious in making transactions online. A great number of fake pieces are being distributed nowadays and you certainly wouldn’t want to be the receiver of any of those. So be very thorough when purchasing antique online. Buy from reputable sources and always ask for a certificate of authenticity for every antique piece you buy.

Needless to say, antique auctions can be very rewarding. You get to know people with whom you share an interest and you get to have the simple joy of examining or introducing antique pieces. Now you’re all set to find amazing auctions and grand antiques.

Photography Educational Institutions - Teaching Possibilities For The Enthusiastic Photographer

11th September 2008
by adrian

Many schools and colleges offer photography training to students as an elective subject. However, there is no requirement to gain admission to an educational institution for a degree if you have studied photography for several years on your own or even taken some helpful classes on a non-formal basis.

Certainly you can learn the skills of a photographer even if you have not taken photography classes in school. But excellence in this field does require dedication, and more formal class training can be a great help.

Remote Training

Some institutions offer “long distance education.” You can enroll in such institutions and - unlike typical college majors - do not need to reside on campus or sit in a classroom environment to learn photography. An example of such institution is New York Institute of Photography.

If you become part of a school like this, you will learn everything from camera equipment to a variety of photographic techniques. You can even study photography during journalism classes. While developing your skills, you also receive magazines and articles related to digital imaging, contests, and a number of other photography-related knowledge and events.

The photography program at the New York Institute is built around 30 lectures on wide array of topics. Initially you are given a brief introduction to the material to allow you to choose your specialized field of interest.

Benefits of Long Distance Training

A significant advantage of non-campus training is that you can perform your regular job and learn photography simultaneously. And there is no time limit for learning photography; whenever you are free, you can learn and practice.

During the training, you will not only sit under the tutelage of a professor, but will also be provided sample pictures allowing you to study great photography to compare and apply your knowledge on a practical level.

There are No Limits

A common belief among those interested in this field is that to become a photographer, you must have your own dark room to develop photos. You will be happy to know that this isn’t the case anymore. Some of the most well known photographers in this business don’t do their own development anymore, paying others instead to do so for them. This affords more time to focus on learning to take great shots.

Another great benefit of photography training is that there is no age limit. Knowledge is a path open to anyone of any age who possesses sufficient interest and motivation. And the rewards you gain from learning photography are incalculable. You have the opportunity to earn good pay through professional photography or simply engage in this activity as a hobby or “labor of love.”

Photography educational institutions not only provide students an environment in which to learn, but also assign specific camera work activities to help their students assess just how much they have gained from the training. And it is all quite fun once you get started!

Making Aromatherapy Candles

10th September 2008
by zoe

Aromatherapy is one of the biggest selling markets today.  Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment that can be used in conjunction with other types of stress relief.  Aromatherapy candles have found their way into many homes, businesses, and alternative health practices. Aromatherapy candles are an excellent way to open up your senses and relieve stress.

Necessary Supplies

Before we begin to make these wonderful candles let us look at what equipment and supplies will be needed.

First you will need essential oils.  Essential oils are obtained from plants using a specific method of distillation.  Essential oils can be very expensive.  The good thing about essential oils is that it only takes a small amount to produce the aroma that you want for your candle.  Some people like to mix these essential oils to make a scent of their own. For now we will stick with just one basic essential oil.  Bergamot is an essential oil used for tension and stress.  It is also an essential oil that is used to help as an antidepressant because it is an uplifting effect.

The type of candle, whether it is a soy or paraffin, will determine the equipment needed. In this article we will show how to make a soy aromatherapy candle using the essential oil for the fragrance. You will need a measuring bowl made of glass to melt your wax, potholders to hold the wax when removing it from the microwave, a spoon, soap, water, a container, essential oil, and dye if desired. You will also need a wick, hot glue gun, and a pencil.

Creating Your Aromatherapy Candle

You are now ready to begin your journey on making your first aromatherapy candle.  Let us take a take a look at wicks.  The wick that you use for your aromatherapy candle can directly effect how your candle burns.  Not all wicks are created equal.  Always purchase the size wick that you need according to the diameter of your candle that you will be crafting.

Now, gather all your supplies and equipment. Place the appropriate amount of soy chip wax into the measuring cup.  To know the amount of wax that you will need you will need to know the capacity of the container that you are putting your aromatherapy candle in.  You can start with a small amount of soy wax chips and add more until you reach the desired amount of melted wax.

While the wax is melting prepare your container by using hot glue to attach the metal portion of the wick to the inside of the container.  Use the pencil with a small amount of the wick wrapped around it to hold the wick in the middle.  Secure the pencil to prevent movement while pouring the wax. Remove the melted wax carefully from the microwave to prevent burns.  Try adding a few drops of essential oil to your melted wax.  It is better to have little than to have too much. That way, when your candle burns, the fragrance does not overwhelm the person that it is for.  This is the experimental part of aromatherapy and most sources do not agree on the amount to use.

Once the oil is in the melted soy wax, mix well and pour into your container.  Be sure the wick is centered after pouring.

For aromatherapy candles using a less decorative glass or tin as the holder will help the person using the candle to concentrate on the aroma and not just on how the container looks.  You now have a beautiful candle that is a wonderful gift to share.  If your candle aroma is not right the first time you may have to experiment with the use of the essential oils to get it right.  Don’t give up; you will create the perfect aromatherapy candle.  Remember, mixing the oils is one way to create your own special aroma.

Doll Carriages - Fascinating Objects to Play with or Display

9th September 2008
by zoe

Doll carriages are a dollhouse accessory. These are carriages for dolls that can be pushed around quite like a baby carriage or perambulator. These are good things for children to play with. They can move around their dolls on the carriages. Sometimes, the doll carriage can even be big enough to carry a child on it. So, children can playfully carry each other on these carriages quite like dolls.

Doll carriage types

The doll carriages can come in a variety of styles and designs and can make use of different materials. There are the popular wooden doll carriages which resemble pushcarts and are strong enough to carry children too. So, children can push around each other on the doll carriage just like they do with the dolls. There are many providers of doll carriages who make the carriages extra wide to ensure stability. Children can turn the wooden doll carriage into a multi use vehicle using their imagination too. So, the doll carriage can become a tractor, a stroller and a lawn mower also during play. Thus, the single toy, the doll carriage, can take over the roles of several toys.

Some doll carriages are there that make pleasant sounds when moved around. These are much in demand. There may be plastic or wooden horses attached to the doll carriages to give a real carriage feel. Floral prints may also be used for decorating the carriage beautifully. Special doll carriages that resemble Cinderella’s carriage can be obtained to accompany dolls representing characters of the Cinderella tale. There are also on offer a variety of doll carriage accessories like the doll carriage cushions, curtains etc. which seek to spruce up the doll carriages and make them look all the more true to the fairy tales.

Resistance to tipping- important doll carriage safety feature

Just like in case of baby carriages it is important for doll carriages to also be resistant to tipping. A durable construction of the doll carriage is important too in order to ascertain that it can withstand years of intense and varied play and can resist the strains of both indoor and outdoor usage.

It can be said that the beautiful dollhouses- castles, palaces etc. seem quite incomplete without the elegant doll carriages accompanying them. So, dollhouse owners need to try and secure suitable doll carriages from the wide variety of designer doll carriages on offer. These will not only make the dollhouses look complete in all respects but also provide an item of great fascination for children to play with.

Dollhouse Miniatures- Small Scale Home Marvels

8th September 2008
by zoe

Miniature models of houses are created as dollhouses. These are usually meant for children who use them as toys. However, adults too are developing a fascination for the dollhouse miniatures and building, decorating and maintaining it has become a favorite pastime for children and adults alike. These miniatures have a unique appeal and never fail to please visitors who glance upon them. Indeed, these small-scale home marvels can win many praises for the person, young or old, setting them up.

Historical background of the dollhouse miniatures

The history of creation of things akin to the dollhouse miniatures can be dated back to four hundred years or so when there were the ‘baby houses’ in Europe. The ‘baby houses’ being cabinet display cases made up of rooms built with architectural details and filled with miniature household items were particularly treasured by the select wealthy matrons in the cities of Holland, England and Germany. Quite strangely, these ‘baby houses’ were kept out of reach of children and was exclusively for adult usage. Owing to their immense value and treasured nature because of which these were considered to be safer when out-of-bounds of children. It has been known that the fully furnished ‘baby houses’ could have been worth the cost of a modest full size home’s construction.

Going about with setting up special dollhouse miniatures

The great thing about dollhouses is that they can come in just anyway you may need/want them. While a dollhouse can be made expensively using the choicest decorations, furniture etc. it can also be set up attractively in an inexpensive manner and decorated beautifully by incurring only the minimum costs.

By deciding upon the style of home to be adopted in the dollhouse miniature a modern contemporary or traditional classic architectural effect can be brought about in the dollhouse too. Famous homes of great people or those of historical significance can also be recreated in dollhouse miniatures by making a judicious selection of dollhouse miniature kits.

You can get started with acquiring a dollhouse miniature of the day in several ways. You may conveniently opt for the readymade and decorated varieties available. You may also buy the dollhouse miniature kits that are on offer or you may proceed to design and make your own dollhouse miniature. It is perhaps best to make use of some suitable dollhouse miniature kit. This can help provide a wider scope for innovative designs to be created.

After readying the dollhouse miniature the miniature objects that are to go inside the dollhouses are to be decided upon. Furniture, interior decorations and dolls- all can be placed appropriately inside the dollhouse miniatures to give a livable feel to the interiors of the dollhouse. Books, clocks etc. may also be placed inside keeping in with taste of the person concerned.

Antique Bottles Give Us a Glimpse of the Past

8th September 2008
by Ady

While antique bottles aren’t usually the first thing to come to mind when people think about antiques, majority of archaeologists understand that knowing what societies put inside their bottles leads to a greater understanding of these societies. At new excavation sites, archaeologists consider the antique bottles and jars that these societies left behind as some of the primary items to search for. Thanks to antique bottles and similar artifacts, we are able to learn about what the diets of these earlier societies consisted of.

Antique bottles and similar artifacts are useful since a society might not have been an agricultural one and its food might have come from abroad. You could figure out a society’s commerce and structure based on antique bottles. Antique bottles tell us how a society acquired its food; they tell us much about individuals in that ancient society and how they survived. At times, antique bottles would have pictures and markings. These help scientists learn even more about the society.

For people who favor more recent history, there are antique bottles from different periods in society in the modern era. It is interesting that through the study of antique bottles that came from different areas in the world, we can observe bottle technology as well as see how their use developed in a variety of cultures.

Many times, antique bottles belonged only to the richer members of a society. A great deal of time had to pass before bottle technology was such that bottles were available to the masses. Today, bottles are as ubiquitous as e-mail. If you examine the development of antique bottles more closely, you will find that it involved numerous clever individuals and a great deal of time to get it to the state in which it is today.

For many collectors of antique collectors, their collection wouldn’t be complete without one or a few bottles from Coca Cola. The Coca Cola Company is known worldwide for its marketing. In fact, one of its most popular antique bottles is that which boasts the image of Santa Claus. A look at Coca Cola’s antique bottles can give any antiques collector a glimpse of how the company began and how it became one of the biggest corporations in the world today. Yes, you can figure all that out by simply looking at Coca Cola antique bottles.
