Surprising Confederate Collectible Can Bring You Money Today

11th October 2008
by zoe

Have you ever seen a Confederate States of America bond?

The CSA desiredmoney for the war–indeed, for its very existence. Because of that, it undertook common practice governments have frequently done in the modern era: it printed bonds. These bonds constituted promises to repay, in the future and with interest, the loan that a southerner or other “investor” had made in the southern cause.

It goes without saying that the majority of Confederate bond purchasers were never repaid, and those certificates that were not destroyed or lost were stashed away in drawers and other dark places.

Today, though, those bond certificates are sought-after collector’s items. And, you can turn around and sell Confederate bonds (along with other types of paper items) on eBay for a pretty decent return.

The Confederate bonds can be enjoyed as decorative items (if framed, they should be mounted using museum type material in order to guard against mishandling; reflectionless glass is also a good idea, despite the the extra expense.

Confederate bonds were issued in a variety of dollar amounts. They further differed from one another in terms of the inscriptions and artwork they used.

At a time when ornamentation held sway, the Confederate bond certificates were vibrant examples the art of embellishment. Besides the terms of the certificate printed in cursive, they frequently contained line graphics of pastoral and city scenes along with people, both real and mythological.

Take as an example a $1000 CSA bond that I purchased at a coin show and had framed several years ago. It is lovely, bearing words printed in ornamental italic script and, in its center, a portrait of the immortal Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. You probably remember that Gen. Jackson died in the confusion of war, after being mistakenly shot by one of his own soldiers during the Battle of Chancellorsville. Being one of the South’s greatest heroes, it was predictable that his portrait should come to grace a Confederate bond.

Southerners weren’t the only purchasers of Confederate war bonds. Many persons in England, and also as other parts of Europe, did too. Could be they were folks whose sympathy in the Great Conflict rested with the South and its cause. Or quite possibly they were merely putting a bet down on on the war’s final outcome.

If your interest in Confederate bond certificates extends beyond merely holding on to and admiring their peculiar beauty and historic aura, you will find them to be a wonderful front door into what is known as “scripophily.” This is the collecting of old financial certificates, which can include bank instruments, stock certificates, railroad bonds and the like.

If you’re a history buff–or if you’re just looking for a different kind of “art” with which to cover your walls–learning about Confederate war bonds and purchasing a few select examples could transform itself into a fund and affordable pastime.  Furthermore,It is also a great area to investigate if you relish the idea of making money by selling “paper”–books, magazines, antique prints and so on.

Leave it to an enterprising British woman to become the foremost expert on making money–even earning a living–selling pieces of American paper, not only old money and bonds but even pages torn out from old magazines.  You can learn more about her surprising eBay paper selling method here.

Old Coin Collecting

Are you interested in enjoying coin collecting as a hobby? If the answer is yes, then you need to know that you are not alone because among the many reasons coin collection is so popular, has to do with its relative simplicity. That in mind, if you are determined to develop a coin collection that will make you proud, or one that you can sell for profit later, then there are some important points that you will want to consider.

Gold Coins

The research of coin collection, for future profit or for personal pride, is perhaps the most important step in coin collecting. A number of the most successful coin collectors are those have taken the time to study the subject and look at coin collecting as a whole. Topics of coin collecting that you should analyze are, collectable coin types, recommended coin collecting supplies and so forth.

Old Coin Value

People just starting could decide that they want to start out collecting as many coins as possible. Keeping all found coins for further careful study is what you may want to do. This is a practice that beginners should begin, because of their inexperience with coin value and condition, in terms of monetary value and worth. When taking this approach, it won’t be long before a large collection of coins has developed - possibly too many. At this point in time, enthusiasts are encouraged to examine their collection and separate the valuable examples from the not so valuable ones. Utilizing the new found experience, they will want to modify their collecting habits to a more discriminating style.

After the coins have been studied and verified, the next essential part is coin storage. Sadly, in the beginning, many new collectors often store them poorly. Many collectors toss their coins just anywhere. The preceding method will keep the coins safe but will they be free from surface damage? If you own a collection of old, rare, or limited edition coins, that might increase in future value, proper care is fundamental. Coin holders are great for displays, but generally speaking, they are not advised as a way of keeping them long term. Coin collections should be stored in coin folders or coin albums, and should be considered as a better solution.

Having knowledge before buying is another fundamental component of your producing a collection to take pride in or to profit from later. Many coin collectors, perhaps you are one, look for rare and worthwhile coins and find that the best way to get them is through purchasing. Most expert collectors know what their coins are valued at. The dealers experience usually protects you from scams, but you should still personally check-out the coin value and condition yourself. You should invariably research a coin that costs more than .

Other than coin dealers, many collectors also look to online auction websites, in order to expand their stock - a great and easy approach for beginners. Some coin collectors try to sell their whole collections online. As you have learned, always try to use caution when purchasing coins.

Learn How To Make Gift Baskets The Easy Way

7th October 2008
by adrian

Christmas, birthday, baby showers, going away to college – the events that people are expected to buy presents for are endless. I know some people that buy a gift for their children’s teachers every Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and at the end of the school year. Can you imagine how much that costs? There is no doubt that gift buying can wreak havoc on your wallet. Making Gift Baskets can ease the burden and be fun at the same time.

Gift baskets do not need to be intricate and expensive and time consuming. In fact, the simpler they are the more appreciated they are usually. Simply put, a basket, some attractive wrapping paper and liner for the basket, maybe a little ribbon, and some useful products can help making gift baskets a simple way of becoming a thoughtful and unique gift giver.

When you are making gift baskets, you’ll want to consider who the basket is for and for what occasion and what type of basket would be most appreciated by them. For instance, someone that is having a baby will need all sorts of little odds and ends that are often overlooked in favor of the bigger presents. Fill up a basket with onesies, face clothes, baby shampoo, a set of baby booties and a baby cap. Wrap it all up in several soft flannel baby towels with some ribbon, attach a rattle to the ribbon and present it in a yellow (or another gender neutral color) basket and you have a Baby Gift Baskets that she’ll appreciate. It will also be a gift she can make immediate use of. The cost was minimal, she’ll know you put some thought into it, and your creativity will be admired by all. Once you get the hang of it, making gift baskets will seem more natural than going out and buying one big expensive item as a gift.

If you decide you are going to be making gift baskets on a regular basis, you can save even more money by watching for sales. Often you can find items on sale if you buy them in multiples. For example, notebooks are something that people of all ages use. Kids use them for drawing and doodling in and adults use them for making lists and such. Almost every woman I know carries a small notebook in her purse. When you buy a set of notebooks in a package, their price will be much lower than if you buy individual notebooks. When you are making gift baskets on a regular basis, you’ll soon start to notice ways that you can find items at lower costs than you would normally buy them. Making gift baskets is fun, economical, and practical. And if you find that you really enjoy it you can open up your own business making gift baskets for other people!

Miniatures – exciting to make and see:

Dollhouse, what it is? It is a small collectible home and it is really fun to make one. Watching a Dollhouse is even more fun. In general, Miniatures are used as toys for children. Many parents make Miniatures to teach their children about the things that would be kept in a home . This has now become a Hobby for many. They too have become child now, great…isn’t it? Many have taken this as a profession itself. They would have started making dollhouse Miniatures as Pastime, which would have turned as a profession in the later stages. How about you creating Miniatures and gifting them to your near and dear ones?
Wow…what fun!

It should be accepted that Miniatures look very real when compared to the toys that children have. Miniatures in general represent either historical buildings or the present day skyscrapers. To make the Dollhouse look real, these Dollhouse artists surf the web or the magazines to get a better idea about the way a palace or a building in those days looked like. They try to represent the buildings that were built centuries ago. This way a child can practically learn about how a certain period was. Collecting things for centuries, old Miniatures itself, is fun. Just imagine days where there were no televisions, computers, iPods, DVDs, CDs, etc. Unable to imagine, right? Imagine how people of those centuries lived. It is definitely an enjoyable experience to search for things that people of earlier centuries used. Is it not a prised possession?

Okay…you have decided on the theme of your Dollhouse. Now the question is where to find the essential tools and materials? Good amount of deals are available and you would have to really put in your best efforts to find great deals. You cannot expect to get great deals in your local grocery store. Glance through your favorite magazines or do a search on the internet to find out online stores that deals with Dollhouse products. There is a whole bunch of online stores. You require little patience to locate one. If you are the one who is going to create a Dollhouse, I’m sure you would have lots of patience as creating a Dollhouse requires patience, perseverance and hard work.

If you feel that it is not that easy to create a Dollhouse and want to go for the readily available one, I would say think twice. Rather than spending hundreds and thousands of dollars in buying a Dollhouse, use the do-it-yourself Dollhouse kits. Porches, stairways, doors, pathway, etc., are readily available and you just have to assemble them all according to your will and wish. How easy ….?

If you have decided to get a Dollhouse, be sure that there is enough room for the new additions in your family, that is, the Dollhouse. Miniatures, whether you do it all by yourself or buy it, it is definitely a pleasure watching these Miniatures come to life.

Collecting Antique Furniture: The Basics

6th October 2008
by zoe

Antique collections often feature completely usable furniture from various historic eras. Because it didn’t rely on mass production and power tools, antique furniture is often more durable and of greater value than most of the stuff made today. Collecting antique furniture usually requires some knowledge about age, how many pieces remain usable today, its condition and use, along with some of the unique features built into a piece of furniture.

The appearance and condition of antique furniture are actually more important than age in assessing the value of a piece. A 200-year-old table for example, may be beyond repair with water damage. Or it may be missing a leg or two that cannot be restored, turning that old hunk of wood into firewood. But a look at the construction of the piece can help to assess its quality and also the period it comes from, if you know what to look for.

Beyond age and functionality, the piece of antique furniture should still be serviceable. So, if all the right conditions are met, it should be possible to sit down on an antique chair and trust that it won’t fall apart. Since nails and other metal fasteners were rarely used on most furniture, the means with which the different pieces are held together can be an indication of its age.

Antique Furniture Restoration Is An Art Form

A majority of antique furniture pieces need repair of some type or another, and not just anyone has the ability to restore them to mint condition. The value and quality are affected by the quantity of wood that needs to be replaced. When choosing a pice of antique furniture, a serious collector won’t look at anything containing replacement wood that exceeds 25 percent.

Most antique furniture was made of mahogany, oak, pine, walnut and rosewood. It’s value as an antique will be impacted by the kind of wood it was made from. Restoring antique furniture requires the same species of wood to be used as in the original construction. It’s not that easy to find someone who is able to make a replica of a table leg using the same type of wood and duplicating the look of the grain.

These days, antique furniture replicas are churned out by factories; they’re made from laminates that copy the grain and pattern of the commonly used woods in antique furniture. However, with these pieces it is easy to spot the difference between the original construction and today’s mass-produced items.

Beadwork Projects And Ideas For Beginners

2nd October 2008
by adrian

Beadwork has been both a hobby and an occupation for hundreds of years. It takes great creativity and skill to create a handcrafted beadwork project. While most beadwork projects are focused on jewelry, there are other projects available. These projects include artwork such as sculpture and wall hangings as well as items of decoration. Some of the most popular beadwork crafts projects include pillows, lamp shades, and bracelets.

Beadwork crafts can be integrated into almost any style and projects. Adding beading to such items as pillows can create an exotic look to any living area. Beadwork patterns can be found in craft stores as well as online. These beadwork patterns will provide the necessary list of supplies, accessories and equipment to purchase in order to complete the projects. It is easiest to make a pillow from scratch by completing the beading design prior to filling and sewing the pillow closed. Obviously, this project needs some amount of skill in both beadworking and sewing, but the finished project is a beautiful handcrafted beadwork pillow.

One of the most sought after and easiest beadwork projects is the beaded lamp shade. This project begins with an ordinary old lamp shade and ends up being transformed into a handcrafted beadwork piece of art. It is a good idea to not attempt to overload the lamp shade with too many beads or it will end up looking tacky. Use a beadwork pattern to pattern the lamp shade and then glue or thread the beads. Beads can also be hung from the base of the lamp shade to inject an additional touch of character. The best part of the beadwork lamp shade project is that there are endless possibilities. These lamp shades are perfect for the home, or for gift-giving. This is also an excellent project for children. A handcrafted beadwork lamp shade is a great starting project.

Beadwork bracelets may appear to be an easy beadwork project to tackle, but this can be deceptive. Yes, it is easy to string beads together, attach a clasp and call it a beadwork bracelet, but the fun comes in during the design and creation of a truly unique piece of jewelry. There are a lot of beads available at beading supply stores, but those beads are often just not enough to be able to design and create something unique. There are some great online shops as well as retail beading stores devoted entirely to beadwork that will have the range of beads necessary to create a unique beadwork bracelet. Beads come in all different shapes, sizes, and materials. The possibilities of combinations and designs are endless. Beadwork jewelry is the most common use of beads, but this is because it is very satisfying to create something that other people will admire worn.

Beadwork is most often seen in jewelry, but these projects, including the pillow and lamp shade break out of that mold. The beadwork bracelet is a great place to start in beadwork design. Beading provides a wonderful outlet for creativity and imagination.

If you love beadworking and are interested in joining a new and exciting online beading community where you can share your passion, learn and meet other beading enthusiasts, then a great place to visit is BeadHuddle.com. At BeadHuddle.com, you can set up your own profile pages, post photos of your latest beading creations and designs, upload and share ‘how to’ beading videos, chat online, write articles and blogs about beading and beadworking, ask questions, share tips and participate in forum discussions and polls, post comments and rate other member’s contributions, take part in quizzes, post events and announcements about beading fairs, markets and shows in your local area, and so much more. Stamp Collecting Freeware

1st October 2008
by adrian

The world is just getting smaller and smaller. With the onset of the Internet technology, the email correspondences and the cellular phone, miles and miles of distance seem to be an issue only of yesterday.

Stamp Collecting Freeware
However, it is not only the means of communications that makes the world smaller. Sharing something with other people in the other parts of the world is a better way to have some sort of connection.

If there is one endeavor that proves to be worthwhile and interesting in this regard, it is stamp collecting. Stamp collecting is a popular hobby. It is shared by millions of people worldwide. People of different ages, nationalities and languages are able to share the sentiments over their favorite past time. They all partake of the longing to look for more stamps to add up to the collection.

What is it really about stamp collecting that make people love it?

Stamp Collecting

Stamp collecting involves the act of saving stamps from the mails and searching further to gather stamps. The stamp collectors can look for very old stamps of other civilizations or simply acquire high-valued ones. They represent more than the value of the postage service in delivering the letter. It also provides one way of looking into the history, culture, politics and art of a certain civilization.

Collecting Stamps

Collecting can be very inexpensive in many ways. Simply gather all the mails in the household and collect the stamps attached. Some people pursue having pen pals abroad to start on their foreign stamp collection. It will not hurt also to ask other friends . More often than not they will be willing to give the stamps from their mail stack.

Simply seek for another stamp collector and trade with one another. There may be stamp clubs in the vicinity or in school that one can choose to join.

Another way for collectors to gather more stamps is to buy from stamp shops or from the postal service. The ordinary stamps will not cost much, they can be purchased at face value. Some items for advanced collectors and the high-valued stamps can be very expensive. Still these stamps are really worthy, so for a serious collector, the price is nothing.

To get a guidance in stamp collecting, it will be very helpful to get a stamp catalogue. This will showcase the stamps with its details and even the price. It can also be a good way to know the value of the stamps in the collections. More on Stamp Collecting.
