I Remember When I Played With My Chess Set

The object that I’ve owned throughout my spirit and criss-crossed the land with, is a tiny electronic chess set. It runs on two AA batteries and has eight distinct accomplishment stages. Naturally after forty three years the whites are a tad yellowed and I’ve misplaced a king along the way, however for the most part and a change of batteries once in a while it has been with me since I was 15 years old.

My chess set has lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and even Alaska. It weathered wedlock and held up with children. It stays patiently in a cabinet for me to find time for a game. Naturally I’ve never done it justness, only ever making to skill stage five and most of the time being comfortable at grade three or four, simply it has been a regular friend. It’s difficult to believe a chess set could be built in 1972 and run on until now, but it was and it’s still omnipresent at the ready to play!

There are numerous unusual and stunning chess sets on the earth, they can be a fun item to amass or to present as gifts. I have seen stunning pieces in the fairs of Isreal and Turkey and in the markets of Malaysia. They appear to be a world-wide phenomenon. These reasonably priced sets constructed from wood, marble or other localized fabrics can be lovely conversation pieces or cosmetic elements, even if one does not play chess.

Additionally, you can discover chess pieces that are fashioned after a mixture of themes, from civil war chess sets symbolizing the North and South to those based on books and movies, such as Lord of the Rings.

An ancient, make that vintage, chess set on the lower shelf of the wash room in my parents’ home in a well-worn black box is nothing gem seekers would submit to Antiques Roadshow for an estimate. However, this set of red and black chessmen, with the strong feel of even the pawns, is invaluable.

In my past are thoughts of childhood, an aunt who passed away before I left grammar school, and hours learning the game and competing with my smaller brother. Instead of growing into chess, I outgrew it, more things going on and little patience as I went toward adolescence. This chess set raises precious remembering beyond the broken board and well eroded pawns.

I recall when I was young that my dad would just on special occasions bring out the family chess set. I was always so thrilled to see the hinged wooden box with the black and bronze one inch checkers on it. This wasn’t your garden variety chess set, this was a completely wooden hand crafted set.

I can recall each and every last chess pieces with extraordinary detail, the knights, so rigorous and drastic. The rooks painstakingly straight cylinders with the minutest details showing hours of work. I continue to have that chess set, it’s devoid a few pieces nowadays, but I still cannot wait to show it to my boys when they’re senior enough to treasure it.
