First introduced around 301 AD is the Solidus coin, also minted by the Romans. The original value of the minted coin was 1000 denarii. The word soldier was derived from the gold Solidus because the Solidus was the currency used to pay the Roman soldiers.

Rare gold coins can sell for astronomical amounts of money. In July, 2002, a rare $20 Double Eagle was sold for over $7 million, becoming the world’s most valuable coin.
